VALDOSTA - Five Lowndes County deputies were forced to resign after a ``scared straight'' session with an 8-year-old got out of hand, Sheriff Ashley Paulk said.
Officers allegedly handcuffed the child and threatened him with bodily harm, including castration, after his mother took him to the jail and asked them to help her discipline him.
``They were verbally abusive,'' Paulk said Friday. ``I don't expect any type of threat or intimidation or anything like that out of my people.''
Paulk said he asked for the resignations of Lt. Calvin Troy, who handled day-to-day administrative responsibilities at the jail, Alvin Clarkston and detectives Roy Hart, Matt Bair and Wendy Lain on Tuesday.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is examining the Jan. 31 incident for possible criminal charges at the request of the sheriffs office and District Attorney David Miller.
Children visit the jail often either individually or with school classes.
``This incident was simply an aberration,'' Paulk said.
