Georgia won't extradite 80-year-old for bad check

By
CROSS CITY, FLORIDA - Georgia officials said they will not extradite or prosecute an 80-year-old man charged with escaping a prison work camp in 1951 while serving time for a bad check.

Don Harrell was arrested in Florida last week on a fugitive warrant issued out of Georgia. The warrant says he fled a Decatur County Public Works Camp in Bainbridge, Georgia, on September 2nd, 1951.

Harrell was a decorated World War Two veteran and former prisoner of war. He had served about five weeks of his eight-month sentence before his escape.

Georgia officials say Harrell wasn't arrested sooner because his fugitive warrant was probably purged from the national crime computer. The outstanding warrants were re-entered in 1998, and Harrell's case appeared during a recent record check.

Harrell spent one night in the county jail before posting a $5,000 bond Friday morning.
