The Democrats New Year's Resolutions

By by Martha Zoller
On an almost daily basis I receive every possible negative article on President Bush from a group of folks I call "The Loyal Opposition." They are what are left in North Georgia of the Democratic Party. They must be given credit. It takes time and effort to scour national and world publications looking only for what makes President Bush look bad. They have one mantra and it is "tax cuts for the rich." It is sad that they do not get it.

Our national swing to the right is part of the historical swing of the pendulum that has been going on for a very long time. The cycle it a generation or two of more liberal ideas being furthered, followed by a generation or two of more conservative ideas being furthered. The funny thing is that is what works in America. We take good ideas and go too far with them and then we have to go back. It keeps us honest, unless you are in the group without ideas.

Right now the Democratic Party has no clear leader. Al Gore really hurt the Party by taking himself out of the Presidential race for 2004 because someone needed to beat him on the Primaries so that they could lead the party. They have no policy on the war; they have no plan for the economy.

David Corn of The Nation said when asked what the Democratic policy on war with Iraq was said that the election was a long way away and they (the Democrats) could see how it goes and then decide what they think. That is just the problem. You cannot decide what you believe in after the fact and then sell it. You have to know what you believe in up front. The Clinton Era has left the Democratic Party unable to know what it believes in and it needs a leader now.

Whether you agree with President Bush or not, you know where he stands on things. You know what to expect from him and the people have said they respect that. The people said with their votes in the 2002 midterm elections that they trust the President and they want to support him.

The President has at every opportunity met his critics and where possible incorporated what they wanted into his policy without compromising his principles. When President Bush went to the UN in September, something he didn't initially what to do and thought was unnecessary, he changed the framework of the debate to what the United States saw as the world priorities in the War on Terror including Iraq.

We were the country that was attacked on September 11, 2001 and we should be the one's to determine the course of action to avenge the innocents that lost their lives on that terrible day.

So what will the Democrat's New Year's Resolutions be? It will be an easy one. Decide what you believe in, not what you are against and then make policy proposals to get that done. After that, it is up to the people.
