Gainesville changing the way it computes some sewer bills

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - People in Gainesville whose homes are on the city sewer system will see a change in the way sewer is billed, beginning with next month's bill.

The city will no longer use a "winter averaging" method to calculate residential sewer.

Instead, sewer will be billed based on each month's water usage. For instance, if you use 10 ccf's of water in January, your sewer bill will be based on 10 ccf's also. Sewer charges will go up or down, right along with your water usage each month.

City officials say most customers will see no increase in their annual cost. However, if you use a large amount of water in the summer - or you do not quickly have a leak repaired - you will realize an annual increase in sewer cost. They say the change is being made as a part of the city's ongoing efforts to promote conservation of water.

The changes affect residential sewer billing only.
