The federal government plans to spend more than $11 million to bolster security and training at Kings Bay submarine base in Camden County.

The proposal, part of U.S. House and Senate spending measures, provides $3.3 million for a waterfront security facility and $8.17 million for a rifle range at the naval base.

Kings Bay is an important strategic asset for the nation, said U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston, a Savannah Republican and member of the House Military Construction Appropriations Subcommittee. The global war on terror has placed increased homeland security needs on the base and highlights the need to keep security personnel trained and ready.

Sheila McNeill, national president of the civilian Navy League, said similar upgrades are going on at bases across the country and that the additions wont have much economic impact in the bases surrounding community.

Its not like well be getting a new squadron or something of that nature, said McNeill, a Brunswick resident. Its wonderful that Kings Bay got the money, but it wont do much to bring in any new business.
