GBI investigating Habersham tax office employees

GAINESVILLE - GBI agent John Cagle confirmed Thursday that the agency is investigating employees of the Habersham County Tax Commissioner's office, but declined to go into specifics.

"We were requested by the (Habersham County) District Attorney's office to conduct that investigation," Cagle said from his Gainesville office. "I'm not going into the nature of it...it's ongoing, I'm not going to go into specifics."

The Northeast Georgian, a Habersham County newspaper, reports that two employees of the tax commissioner's office have resigned, but county officials declined to say if the resignations were related to the probe. County officials also won't say what the investigation is about.

One of the resignations occurred on November 2 and the other on November 5, according to the paper.
