Grass fires in New Holland

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - GAINESVILLE - Wind-swept flames fanned grass fires in the New Holland area about noon Friday.

Hall County Fire Marshal David Kimbrell says they got the call around 11:30 and were on the scene for about an hour.

"It was actually about a half-mile stretch of three or four separate incidents where the grass was on fire," Kimbrell says.

Kimbrell adds there are a few ways the fire may have started.

"It could have been a hot break or a hot wheel on a truck," KImbrell says. "Sometimes they throw out sparks similar to a train."

"It could also have been malicious," He adds. "But we cannot prove, right now, one way or the other."

An embankment and part of the shoulder of the road along Jewell Parkway near Spring Street in New Holland were among the areas that were burned.
