GAINESVILLE - State Senator Carol Jackson of Cleveland confirmed to Democrats meeting in Gainesville Thursday night she will not be a candidate for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Zell Miller.
Jackson's name surfaced last month among Georgia Democratic Party leaders looking for a viable candidate for the post.
Jackson made her announcement at a town hall meeting hosted by Hall County Democrats Thursday night at the Gainesville Civic Center.
Several Republicans have announced plans to run for the post.
Former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young was the most notable potential candidate among Democrats until he said a few weeks ago that he would not run. Democrats then tried to recruit Michelle Nunn, daughter of former Sen. Sam Nunn, but she, too, declined.
