ATLANTA - The chancellor of Georgia's public colleges said sending tax dollars to higher education is the best way to improve the economy.
Chancellor Thomas Meredith urged lawmakers not to cut more money from the university system in his first State of University System address Wednesday.
Falling tax revenues prompted the state to cut $184 million - or more than ten percent - from the university system this fiscal year.
Governor-elect Sonny Perdue has warned the fiscal outlook may not improve right away. The state's universities are bracing for further cuts when the legislative session begins Monday.
