AUGUSTA - Charles Walker, Georgia's first black Senate majority leader, and Ed McIntyre, Augusta's first black mayor, have not always been on the same side politically.
But the two politicians have announced they are working together to publish the first history book about the accomplishments of black Augustans.
Both men say if someone doesn't preserve the city's black history, it could be lost.
The Walker Group, in cooperation with the CSRA Classic Foundation, has awarded a $15,000 grant to McIntyre's Augusta African-American Historical Committee Incorporated, a nonprofit cultural and ethnic awareness group.
The grant will pay for initial research on the book, to be conducted by local historian Jimmy Carter. The historical committee plans to ask for additional contributions as research progresses.
Both authors say they expected to include themselves as notable figures in the book, which is expected to be completed within a year.
