Politicians join forces to write book about Augusta history

AUGUSTA - Charles Walker, Georgia&#39;s first black Senate majority leader, and Ed McIntyre, Augusta&#39;s first black mayor, have not always been on the same side politically. <br> <br> But the two politicians have announced they are working together to publish the first history book about the accomplishments of black Augustans. <br> <br> Both men say if someone doesn&#39;t preserve the city&#39;s black history, it could be lost. <br> <br> The Walker Group, in cooperation with the CSRA Classic Foundation, has awarded a $15,000 grant to McIntyre&#39;s Augusta African-American Historical Committee Incorporated, a nonprofit cultural and ethnic awareness group. <br> <br> The grant will pay for initial research on the book, to be conducted by local historian Jimmy Carter. The historical committee plans to ask for additional contributions as research progresses. <br> <br> Both authors say they expected to include themselves as notable figures in the book, which is expected to be completed within a year.
