JACKSON - A newborn baby girl was found abandoned in a women's restroom of a McDonald's restaurant, Butts County authorities said Thursday.
The baby, believed to be less than 12 hours old, was taken to Sylvan Grove Hospital, where she was in good condition, hospital officials said.
Jackson Police Chief Mike Riley said a customer at the fast-food restaurant found the baby on the bathroom floor shortly before 3:30 p.m. She was clothed, wrapped in a blanket and covered in a red and white shawl.
Police were following ``some very promising leads'' in trying to identify whoever abandoned the baby, Riley said.
Under state law, mothers can legally turn over their newborns within a week of birth to personnel at a medical facility with a birthing center without facing abandonment charges. It was intended to prevent baby abandonment in out-of-the-way places.
``Somebody obviously cared for this child,'' Riley said. ``She was dressed warmly on an extremely cold day. But had the restroom not been used in a while, she could have taken a turn for the worse.''
The child was placed in the custody of the Butts County Department of Family and Children's Services.
