Georgia legislators talk about war with Iraq

By
ATLANTA - War in Iraq was subject of a quick debate Monday in the Georgia House.

Democratic Representative Bob Holmes of Atlanta rose to oppose war in the Persian Gulf and called on President Bush to stop his ``increasingly irrational and excessive behavior'' on Iraq.

He says President Bush has not present sufficient evidence to justify a unilateral attack on Iraq.

After Holmes spoke, several other House members rose to support Bush, including House Republican leader Lynn Westmoreland of Sharpsburg and Democrat Chuck Sims of Douglas, a Persian Gulf War veteran.

Holmes told his colleagues he was planning an anti-war talk, so others had responses ready.

The debate was muted compared to the one in the House in the early 1990s when several lawmakers walked out as then-state Representative Cynthia McKinney spoke against the Gulf War.
