Ousted mayor regrets saying he wanted to quit

CUSSETA - When Cusseta Mayor Tim Jones said he'd had enough during a council meeting last week, members decided to hold him to his word.

The council voted 3-2 Wednesday night to accept his resignation. Jones said he was stunned by the action.

``I do not wish to resign nor am I resigning,'' Jones said before the vote.

The Cusseta businessman apologized for using foul language during the Jan. 23 meeting. He also admitted he threw his keys on a table and stormed out of the building after he said he was quitting.

``The statement was made, 'I've had enough of it. I quit,''' Jones said. ``That was in the heat of the moment. I regret it.''

Cusseta councilman Tom St. John voted in favor of Jones' resignation. He cited the town charter which states that the mayor leaves office when he resigns.

But Charlie Wright, who chairs a Cusseta-Chattahoochee consolidation panel, said Wednesday night's action was moot because Jones had said earlier that he wasn't resigning. Wright said the council couldn't vote the mayor out because the people voted him in.

Jones has been mayor for a year. He said he planned to seek an attorney's advice on the matter.

The council expected to meet again Friday.
