Sharpsburg mayor steps down after 16 years

By
SHARPSBURG - Sharpsburg mayor Alvin Arrowood served his last day as mayor Friday, after 16 years on the job.

Arrowood decided last week to step down because of health problems. A series of strokes during the past year left the 77-year-old looking to turn the job over to someone more physically able to handle the duties in the town of 271 people.

Sharpsburg is located 20 miles southwest of Atlanta.

Mayor Pro-Tem David Mullins will replace Arrowood until a special election is scheduled.

Arrowood was working as a plumber at Fort McPherson when then-Mayor Arthur Willingham asked him to put his name on the council ballot in 1972. He reluctantly did and served 14 years on the council before becoming mayor.

Arrowood said he will continue working part-time, overseeing the plumbing department at a Peachtree City hardware store.
