CARROLLTON - Authorities are investigating the possibility that the suspect in Tuesday night's slaying sought his own death through ``suicide by cop.''
Sheriff Terry Langley said Wednesday that officials believe 31-year-old Terry Johnson, of Villa Rica, started a fire at his home last night because he was angry at his wife. Officials say the couple was separated.
The sheriff says officers fired on Johnson after he killed 42-year-old Lieutenant Billy Jiles and the man identified as Robert Smith. Authorities say they know of no connection between the suspect and Smith, who was gunned down inside his home in Carrollton.
Fire investigators were still at the home around noon Wednesday. A neighbor -- Charles Walker -- says firefighters found a handwritten will and testament in the mailbox.
The shootout followed a pursuit that began around 9 p.m. Tuesday after a neighbor reported the fire.
Officials say Johnson fled his house and went to Smith's house, where he killed Smith and later fired on Jiles, who was on patrol.
Langley said Jiles had been an officer for 20 years and had worked for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Douglas County Sheriff's Department before coming to Carroll County. He leaves behind a wife and two children.
