MACON - For two decades, a dark reminder was hidden at Terminal Station in Macon. When the train station was built 86 years ago, the words ``Colored Waiting Room'' were etched in tall letters on a stone archway.
But when Georgia Power bought the building in 1982 and converted it into office space, company officials decided to cover the words up.
Now that the city has reacquired Terminal Station, Mayor Jack Ellis says it's time to expose and explain the city's segregated past.
When the city took control of the building August 26, it removed the covering over the ``Colored Waiting Room'' sign. Within the next month, Ellis wants to place a plaque next to the words, explaining why they were carved there.
Terminal Station served as the main hub in two world wars for transporting troops. It was a part of the state's passenger rail system until 1971, when it closed.
