Man skips work detail, evades mayor before being brought back in

COLUMBUS - Police say an inmate escaped a work detail, ran down the street and bumped into the mayor before being apprehended. <br> <br> Muscogee County Prison Deputy Warden William Adamson says 28-year-old Brad Mathis of Columbus was doing janitorial work at the Columbus Government Center on Thursday when he sneaked past a security officer on the ground floor. <br> <br> The first house he passed after his escape belonged to Mayor Bobby Peters, who was in his front yard working on his daughter&#39;s car. <br> <br> Peters says he tried to catch Mathis but he failed and called 911 instead. <br> <br> Mathis was recaptured a few hours later. <br> <br> Mathis was serving a two-year term in Muscogee County Prison for a parole violation. He had a lengthy criminal record that included obstruction of an officer, criminal trespass, deposit account fraud, perjury, disorderly conduct and robbery.
