COLUMBUS - Police say an inmate escaped a work detail, ran down the street and bumped into the mayor before being apprehended.

Muscogee County Prison Deputy Warden William Adamson says 28-year-old Brad Mathis of Columbus was doing janitorial work at the Columbus Government Center on Thursday when he sneaked past a security officer on the ground floor.

The first house he passed after his escape belonged to Mayor Bobby Peters, who was in his front yard working on his daughter's car.

Peters says he tried to catch Mathis but he failed and called 911 instead.

Mathis was recaptured a few hours later.

Mathis was serving a two-year term in Muscogee County Prison for a parole violation. He had a lengthy criminal record that included obstruction of an officer, criminal trespass, deposit account fraud, perjury, disorderly conduct and robbery.
