ATLANTA - Former state Representative Steve Stancil of Canton has won a close race to claim the GOP nomination for lieutenant governor.
He has the right to challenge incumbent Democrat Mark Taylor in November.

But a recount looms as a possibility because the margin is so close.
Stancil leads by 1,267 votes out of more than 180,000 cast. State Senator Mike Beatty has not conceded.
In another runoff, Republican voters rejected Vernadette Ramirez Broyles, the Hispanic candidate party leaders had hoped would win the nomination for Secretary of State. Instead, they chose Charley Bailey, who will face incumbent Democrat Cathy Cox in the fall.
Educator Barbara Christmas won a Democratic runoff for the state school superintendent's nomination. Christmas -- a former executive of the state's largest teacher organization -- defeated businessman Joe Martin, a former Atlanta school board member. She will face Republican Kathy Cox.
Republicans in the Fourth Congressional District, which includes most of DeKalb County, chose Cynthia Van Auken over Catherine Davis to meet Democrat Denise Majette. Majette defeated incumbent Cynthia McKinney in August.
