SAVANNAH - About 400 people gathered at the Savannah River for a memorial service as Georgians marked the anniversary of the September 11 attacks Wednesday.
Many wore the stars and stripes on their lapel pins, ball caps, T-shirts and blue jeans. And several dabbed tears during the national anthem.
Across the state, Georgians joined the rest of the nation to mourn the dead and honor the heroes, pausing from work, school and even vacations.
Governor Barnes in Atlanta addressed a packed crowd at Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Martin Luther King Junior once preached. Barnes made a point of noting the heroes of September 11 were ``people from everyday life.''
One of the nation's busiest airports even paused to mark the anniversary. Passengers and workers at Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport were asked to observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. -- the time the first airliner crashed into the World Trade Center in New York.
