With tears and memorials, Georgians mark Sept. 11

SAVANNAH - About 400 people gathered at the Savannah River for a memorial service as Georgians marked the anniversary of the September 11 attacks Wednesday. <br> <br> Many wore the stars and stripes on their lapel pins, ball caps, T-shirts and blue jeans. And several dabbed tears during the national anthem. <br> <br> Across the state, Georgians joined the rest of the nation to mourn the dead and honor the heroes, pausing from work, school and even vacations. <br> <br> Governor Barnes in Atlanta addressed a packed crowd at Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Martin Luther King Junior once preached. Barnes made a point of noting the heroes of September 11 were ``people from everyday life.&#39;&#39; <br> <br> One of the nation&#39;s busiest airports even paused to mark the anniversary. Passengers and workers at Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport were asked to observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. -- the time the first airliner crashed into the World Trade Center in New York.
