SAVANNAH - A drunk man who fired a gun into the floor and killed his wife downstairs even though he couldn't see her was convicted of murder Wednesday night in Savannah.
Donald Chase of Savannah, was charged with felony murder in the death of his wife of 32 years. The 56-year-old Chase had gone on a two-day drinking binge that led to an argument in their historic Savannah townhouse last September 17th.
Chase could not see his wife, Jackie, through the carpeted floor of the upstairs den. But prosecutor Nancy Grey Smith told jurors that he could hear her pouring out his liquor into the kitchen sink below, and knew she was there.
Chase was convicted of felony murder and aggravated assault after six hours of jury deliberations. He will serve an automatic life sentence.
He acknowledged firing the single shot that hit his 55-year-old wife in the head. He told police in a taped interview that he was ``trying to be dramatic'' as they quarreled over his drinking and his wife's sexual past.
Chase's attorney, Steve Beauvais, told the jury that if Chase had intended to kill his wife he would have done it another way, such as at close range using a second handgun he kept near the kitchen.
