Brunswick bridge delayed again, until 2003

By
BRUNSWICK - More delays for the new Sidney Lanier Bridge in Brunswick.

The state Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that the $110 million bridge won't be ready until 2003. It had been scheduled to open next month.

Brunswick's troubled bridge over the Brunswick River's placid water will open at least two years behind schedule - after seven years of construction.

For commuters, the bridge can't open soon enough. The 46-year-old drawbridge now used opens up to 20 times daily to allow ships to pass through to Brunswick's port, snarling car traffic at either end. The Coast Guard declared the narrow passage a hazard in 1991.

The new bridge will be suspended by steel cables that fan out from 480-foot towers like a pair of giant sails. It arcs 180 feet above the river to allow large ships to pass underneath.
