BURNSVILLE, N.C. - Federal officials have begun their investigation into the crash of a single-engine airplane that killed two people in Yancey County. <br>

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration began their investigations Saturday. Authorities said Friday's crash occurred as the plane was preparing to land. <br>

Authorities identified the victims as Calloway Hill Preddy Jr., 60, and his wife, Carol Green Preddy, 58. Carol Preddy, a licensed pilot, was flying, they said. <br>

Authorities said the Georgia couple had taken off from Atlanta and stopped in Asheville. Their plane was attempting to land at a private strip at the Mountain Air Country Club near Burnsville, according to the Yancey County Sheriff's Department. <br>

An autopsy was being performed at Watauga Medical Center in Boone.
