ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - The Gainesville woman who was seeking the Miss America 2003 title saw her chance for the crown end Saturday night shortly after the competition began.

Amy Mulkey, the reigning Miss Georgia, did not make the list of 15 semi-finalists which was announced in Atlantic City, New Jersey, early in the first hour of the pageant, which was expected to last about three hours.

However, the 23-year-old Mulkey and the other 35 contestants who failed to make the cut will each get a $5,000 scholarship. In addition, Amy won a $3,000 scholarship earlier in the week during the preliminaries to Saturday night's finals.

Miss Illinois, Erika Harold, was named Miss America 2003.
