FORT BENNING - An autopsy found that a recent West Point graduate who died July 1 during a Ranger training exercise succumbed to heat stroke, the Army said Friday.

Second Lt. Zachariah Miller of Stoneboro, Pa., a Rhodes scholar just months away from going to Oxford University, died one month to the day after receiving his U.S. Military Academy diploma from graduation keynote speaker President George W. Bush.

Miller, 22, was one day away from completing the three-week, pre-U.S. Army Ranger training program. He began a land navigation course shortly after 9:30 a.m. July 1 and was last seen alive about 1:30 p.m., Army officials said.

When he failed to meet a deadline, a search crew was dispatched and found Miller's body about 8 p.m.

Miller's death was one of two at Fort Benning last month. On Wednesday, officials said that a 17-year-old Army recruit who died after a 1-mile run on Monday had an enlarged heart. The condition likely led to the death of Pfc. Nicholas O. Williams, of Pinehurst, Ga., Fort Benning spokesman Rich McDowell said.
