Georgians turn out for second tax-free shopping spree

SAVANNAH - Georgians went back-to-school shopping in a big way Friday, enduring long lines at the checkout counters for a chance to buy their supplies tax-free. <br> <br> Continuing through Saturday, the state is waiving sales taxes from school supplies, as well as clothing items under $100 and new computers. <br> <br> With the first day of school around the corner, shoppers crammed the aisles at the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Savannah, piling notebooks, crayons, pencils and backpacks into their carts and checking them off supply lists. <br> <br> Lynne Harrison of Garden City said she had to shop for everythings from school supplies to clothings, and it was a good day to do it. <br> <br> Her cart was almost filled to the top with supplies for her children. She said, ``Every penny counts. I&#39;ve got four (children), and I&#39;ve still got to buy shoes and clothes for all of them.&#39;&#39; <br> <br> Georgia lawmakers and Governor Barnes approved tax holidays for two days before Easter and this weekend to encourage spending during an economic downturn. <br> <br> The Department of Revenue has estimated the tax-free days will cost the state between eleven million dollars and $15 million, though no figures are available for the previous two-day tax break in March.
