FORT STEWART - Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield are eliminating 150 positions as part of an Army-wide effort to streamline civilian jobs on bases.

The cuts are in the Directorate of Readiness office, which employs about 370 active-duty soldiers and civilians who coordinate troop deployments by land, sea and air. Employees learned of the layoffs last week.
Fort Stewart officials are working to help displaced civilian employees find other employment before January when the cuts take effect.

A hiring freeze has been put in place for blue collar and lower-grade government service workers to give the civilian employees a first shot at the jobs.
Laid-off employees will also be given the option of taking early retirement, transferring to other bases or accepting lower-grade positions.
