Fort Stewart planning to layoff 150 employees

FORT STEWART - Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield are eliminating 150 positions as part of an Army-wide effort to streamline civilian jobs on bases. <br> <br> The cuts are in the Directorate of Readiness office, which employs about 370 active-duty soldiers and civilians who coordinate troop deployments by land, sea and air. Employees learned of the layoffs last week. <br> <br> Fort Stewart officials are working to help displaced civilian employees find other employment before January when the cuts take effect. <br> <br> A hiring freeze has been put in place for blue collar and lower-grade government service workers to give the civilian employees a first shot at the jobs. <br> <br> Laid-off employees will also be given the option of taking early retirement, transferring to other bases or accepting lower-grade positions.
