AUGUSTA - A handcuffed 19-year-old arrested during an early morning traffic stop escaped from a back-seat patrol car cage, stole the vehicle and injured a deputy Wednesday, authorities said.
Robert Willie Cason III of Augusta crawled through a cage window from the back while Deputy Jason Youngblood was standing outside, Richmond County sheriff's Maj. Ken Autry said.
Cason - who was wanted for violating probation - aimed the vehicle at the deputy, hitting the officer and breaking his right hand, Autry said.
Youngblood fired two shots, and Cason wrecked the car nearby, jumped out and ran. He later got out of the handcuffs but was arrested after an eight-hour search. He remained jailed Wednesday night on charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, theft by taking and escape.
Autry said the sheriff's department is reviewing its patrol cars.
``We're looking at the design of the window to see if we need to change the type of cage we have on the vehicle or make some modifications,'' he said.
