McKinney trailing former judge Majette

By
ATLANTA - Outspoken Democratic Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney fell behind challenger Denise Majette tonight in early primary returns from the Fourth District east of Atlanta.

McKinney looked to clinch a sixth term in Congress but faced the toughest challenge of her political career from a former state judge who campaigned as an alternative to the firebrand incumbent.

With 32 of 174 precincts reporting, Majette has 14,419 votes, or 80 percent, compared to 3,594 votes, or 20 percent for McKinney.

It is unclear which precincts are reporting, which could skew the early returns. McKinney is strongest in south DeKalb County, and at least four of the reporting precincts are from more conservative Gwinnett County.

Pre-election polls showed Majette and McKinney locked in a tight race. The district is heavily Democratic, so the primary winner is likely to win in November.
