ATLANTA - Georgia voters chose nominees for the state Legislature Tuesday, many of them voting in districts that have changed dramatically since the last election.
A redistricting plan approved last summer gives Democrats a distinct edge in holding on to a majority in both houses. At least 12 Republican incumbents were drawn into districts together to force them to run against each other.
Another change is the addition of 23 multimember House districts. Voters in those larger areas will choose more than one candidate to represent them, for a total of 56 lawmakers. The remaining 124 House districts will have single member each.
Members of the General Assembly must be re-elected every two years. There are a total of 236 members, 180 in the House and 56 in the Senate.
Republicans have not controlled either house of the Legislature since Reconstruction.
