ATLANTA - A Fulton County grand jury indicted an East Point woman Tuesday in the death of her 3-year-old granddaughter, Alexis Headspeth.
Family members and neighbors said they repeatedly told the Division of Family and Children Services they believed the girl and her siblings were being mistreated at the home of their maternal grandmother, Beverly Headspeth. The grand jury indicted Headspeth, 45, on charges of involuntary manslaughter, reckless conduct and contributing to the deprivation of a minor.
Headspeth is accused of leaving Alexis in the care of her 11-year-old son. The charges stem from a July 29 incident in which Headspeth told her son to take Alexis to the bathroom and clean the child. Authorities said the boy did that by dunking Alexis under water in the tub until she lost consciousness.
Alexis was taken off life support earlier this month after being hospitalized with head injuries.
Prosecutors said the state has not decided whether to pursue charges against the boy in juvenile court.
The grand jury also called a news conference Tuesday to demand a special grand jury investigate the child welfare system that has been monitoring the family for three years.
