ATLANTA - Former Atlanta Police Chief Beverly Harvard was named assistant security director at Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport on Tuesday.
Harvard, 51, spent 29 years on the Atlanta police force, including her last eight as police chief. She will report to Willie Williams, the former Los Angeles police chief who became the airport's federal security director earlier this year.
Congress created the Transportation Security Administration after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to oversee aviation security nationwide.
``I look forward to telling my grandchildren I was a part of this,'' Harvard said Tuesday.
Federal security directors and their deputies are responsible for all aspects of aviation security. That includes screening of passengers, baggage and cargo, the perimeter of the airport, ticket counters, lobbies and gates.
In June, former New Orleans police chief Richard Pennington was named to replace Harvard.
