ATLANTA - After spending 30 years in the Georgia House, State Representative Billy McKinney seemed unbeatable. But like his more famous daughter, he was more vulnerable than it appeared.
McKinney, the father of U.S. Representative Cynthia McKinney, who lost her re-election bid on Tuesday, now faces a September tenth primary runoff election in his House District 44.
The elder McKinney, a former Atlanta policeman known for his combative political style, got 48 percent of the vote in Tuesday's primary, compared to 46 percent for challenger John Noel.
A third candidate, Patrick Stafford, got five percent, forcing a runoff.
Friends and supporters of McKinney say his campaign was hindered by a redrawn district that included more white voters, his declining health, and the time he spent on his daughter's re-election bid against Denise Majette.
