MACON - A Macon city councilman says a report that he wanted to kill himself was false and invented by his political enemies, but police are not so sure.
Councilman Melvyn Williams, who also is acting superintendent of schools for nearby Hancock County, said Monday he is not suicidal and the situation was a misunderstanding.

Williams' wife, Ella, says an anonymous caller told her that her husband was in Sparta, 45 miles northeast of Macon, early Saturday morning, holding a gun to his head and threatening to kill himself.

She then called police and relayed the message.

She told the Macon Telegraph that she overreacted.
But according to a Macon police report, Ella Williams told police her husband had called her himself, told her he was severely depressed and that she should move on with her life. There was no mention of anonymous calls in the report.
Melvyn Williams was found by Sparta police later Saturday morning, authorities said. But his wife says the Sparta police did not find him, and Williams returned home on his own.
Williams said the anonymous calls were made to cast a negative light on his character and undermine his political goals.
