Lawmaker wants to keep burn unit at medical university in South Carolina

CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA - A lawmaker wants to keep the state&#39;s only burn unit at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. <br> <br> Republican Representative John Graham Altman the third of Charleston said, ``Maintaining the burn unit at MUSC is the single most important thing I can do and the single most important thing we can do.&#39;&#39; <br> <br> School officials said last month the ten-bed adult burn unit would stop accepting new patients June 10. <br> <br> The university will continue to treat most burn patients, but patients with major burns will be stabilized and transferred to burn units in Augusta, Georgia, or Charlotte, North Carolina. <br> <br> MUSC Children&#39;s Hospital will care for pediatric cases. <br> <br> MUSC&#39;s president, Doctor Ray Greenberg, said as many as 25 burn patients each year might be referred, but the hospital will continue to take care of about 90 percent of burn patients.
