CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA - A lawmaker wants to keep the state's only burn unit at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
Republican Representative John Graham Altman the third of Charleston said, ``Maintaining the burn unit at MUSC is the single most important thing I can do and the single most important thing we can do.''
School officials said last month the ten-bed adult burn unit would stop accepting new patients June 10.
The university will continue to treat most burn patients, but patients with major burns will be stabilized and transferred to burn units in Augusta, Georgia, or Charlotte, North Carolina.
MUSC Children's Hospital will care for pediatric cases.
MUSC's president, Doctor Ray Greenberg, said as many as 25 burn patients each year might be referred, but the hospital will continue to take care of about 90 percent of burn patients.
