GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA - Theresa Schmidt says the latest problem to beset her husband sums up the last six months of his life -- what can go wrong, will go wrong.
Friends and strangers raised five-thousand dollars to help Bob Schmidt, who's dying from stomach cancer. Two-thousand dollars of that money was stolen from a safe at a Darryl's restaurant in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Authorities say someone forced the manager into a freezer after midnight Sunday and looted the safe's contents.
In January, Bob Schmidt lost his job when the Darryl's restaurants he managed were closed. Several unsuccessful business ventures shrunk their savings. In May, Bob Schmidt learned of his cancer.
The Schmidts have no life insurance and lost their medical insurance when Bob Schmidt lost his job. They've sold their Greensboro home and will move to Atlanta Sunday to be with their extended families.
