DECATUR, Ga. - Nearly a dozen people were hurt Sunday when a patio deck caved in during a birthday party, fire officials said.
The incident happened around 12:30 a.m. at a house in a subdivision near Pine Lake, DeKalb fire Lt. Eric Jackson said. Part of the 10-foot high deck collapsed, dumping several people onto the ground. Nine people were taken to DeKalb Medical Center for treatment.
``There were an awful lot of people at this particular get-together,'' Jackson said. ``Our presumption is that the deck was overloaded, which caused it to give way.''
One person was hospitalized in good condition Sunday. The others were treated for minor injuries and released.
Jackson said rescue crews were delayed because cars were parked on both sides of the street. Fire and EMS personnel had to park their vehicles and walk to the house.
