EAST POINT - Police have identified a motorist who was fatally shot when he fled police during a traffic stop near Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport.
Police identified the victim as Allison Jones, 33, whose hometown was not known.
An autopsy Wednesday determined that Jones died of a gunshot wound to the chest, said Tami Schroder, senior investigator for the Fulton County Medical Examiners' Office. No further details were available.
Jones was fatally shot Tuesday morning after he was spotted driving a sports-utility-vehicle erratically and tried to flee police. The SUV crashed into a guardrail, East Point police said.
Authorities were approaching the SUV when it rolled back toward them, officials said. Police fired several shots into the vehicle, which then drove across a bridge over Interstate 85 and ran off the road nearby.
Two officers were placed on administrative assignment, a routine procedure following a police shooting.
