FOREST PARK - Nero, a Military Police dog whose duties over 12 years included guarding the president, was buried Tuesday with honors in the pet cemetery at Fort Gillem.
The six other MP dogs assigned to the Army post and Fort McPherson in Atlanta, along with their handlers, joined four of Nero's former handlers at the service.
Nero died June 19 of natural causes after a life of military service. His initial training was under the 341st Training Squadron at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, according to his biography.
He was dual certified for patrol duty and explosives detection and served in Operation Joint Endeavor in Bosnia.
Nero and his first handler, retired Staff Sgt. Tom Moore, were called to help protect President Clinton and Vice President Al Gore when they traveled.
Fort Gillem's Veterinary Corps officer, Capt. Michael McCown, received Nero's cremated remains from his last handler, Sgt. 1st Class John Dalton, and placed them in the grave while a bugler played taps.
Nero's collar and leash will be put on display at the kennels at Fort Gillem, and a plaque will be hung there in his memory.
