NORCROSS - A Norcross police officer came out of a medically-induced coma Wednesday after being shot almost two weeks ago.

Cpl. Mark Clarence Gibbs, 32, was breathing on his own, doctors said. He is expected to move to a rehabilitation center in the next few days.

Gibbs was shot in the head while trying to evict Martin James Logan from the Villager Lodge motel in suburban Atlanta last month. Gwinnett County police said another officer fired on Logan, hitting him in the chest and head.

Logan, 46, remained in critical condition at Atlanta Medical Center. He faces two counts of aggravated assault.

Motel employees said Logan had been fired from his position as assistant manager before the shooting. Police say Logan opened the door of his room and began firing on the officers.

A fund has been established to aid Gibbs' family. Anyone interested can bring donations in person at Regions Bank, 5935 Highway 23, Norcross.
