AUGUSTA - Authorities say Reinaldo Rivera, accused of raping and killing four young women, faces another felony charge for fighting with guards at the Richmond County jail.
Jailers subdued Rivera with pepper spray after he refused to stop kicking his cell door Tuesday. The officers were not hurt, and Rivera suffered a minor elbow injury.
The 38-year-old Rivera faces a felony obstruction charge.
Sheriff's Captain Gene Johnson says Rivera has been more aggressive in the past two weeks, possibly because he has refused to take his anti-depressant medication.
The North Augusta, South Carolina man is accused of killing Fort Gordon Army Sergeant Marni Glista and Tabatha Bosdell in Georgia in 2000. He is also accused in the 1999 slayings of Melissa Dingess and Tiffaney Wilson, both 17, in Aiken County, South Carolina.
Against his lawyer's advice, Rivera told a judge in April that he wanted to plead guilty and get on with his punishment.
Superior Court Judge Albert M. Pickett accepted the request of prosecutors to have Rivera examined by mental health experts. Attorneys are preparing written arguments on whether he can enter a guilty plea.
