WASHINGTON - Georgia Representative Jack Kingston is in the race for the Number Five House leadership post.

Kingston sent a letter Tuesday morning to his Republican colleagues telling them he is running for the GOP's conference vice chair slot.

He joins Wyoming's Barbara Cubin and Pennsylvania's Melissa Hart as candidates for the position.

The Number five congressional post became vacant earlier this month when Conference Chairman J.C. Watts, from Oklahoma, announced his retirement.

The current vice chair, Ohio's Deborah Pryce, is one of the candidates for Watts' job and members can run for only one position.
If he wins, Kingston would become the chamber's highest-ranking Georgian since Newt Gingrich retired.
