BRUNSWICK - A 102-year-old Brunswick man who is believed to be the oldest active member of the Kiwanis Club in the world was celebrated Wednesday and given a medallion of honor.
Charley Zell, a charter member of The Kiwanis Club of Brunswick, joined in January of 1924.

After Robert Lambertson -- governor of the club's Georgia district -- draped the medallion around his neck, Zell thanked those who came to honor him.

He said, ``I shall never forget this day.''

Lambertson says the Kiwanis Club international office knows of no member in the world who has served longer than Zell and that the organization has no active members as old as he is.

Zell has lived through 18 presidential administrations, starting with William McKinley. He made his career in finance and he continues to go to his Zell Enterprises office every day.

Zell also developed subdivisions in Glynn and McIntosh counties and opened huge warehouses in Jacksonville, Florida.
A few years ago, illness put him in a wheelchair. But he has since recovered enough to walk, although he needs the help of a cane and his nurses at times.
