JONESBORO - Clayton County prosecutors have added another charge against the mother of a 23-year-old autistic man after she intervened in a confrontation between police and her son.
Officials filed a charge of battery yesterday against Julia Munger -- the day her trial was scheduled to begin in State Court. Her trial has been postponed until late August.

She plans to plead innocent to battery on an officer and the original charge of obstruction of an officer during an arraignment hearing Tuesday.

Munger was charged in January after she stepped in when police were called to a Publix store in Morrow after her son, Billy, experienced a panic attack. Police say she became too aggressive.

Her defenders say the second charge appears to be retaliation for her speaking out.
Clayton County Solicitor Keith Martin denied any retaliation. But he said the new charge stemmed from what officials learned about the case from statements Munger made in interviews with reporters. He would not elaborate.
