AUGUSTA - A man who told police he was teaching his 6-year-old niece a lesson when he forced her to drink her own urine has been charged with cruelty to children.
Jack Walden III, 29, discovered that his niece had urinated into a cup and was trying to make her 3-year-old sister drink it, sheriff's investigator Jo Ann Nutter said. To punish the older child, Walden told her to drink it.
``That's just deplorable,'' Nutter said. ``There's punishment, and there's punishment. But that's criminal.''
Walden was arrested Monday on a felony charge that could lead to five to 20 years in prison. He told police he works as a youth counselor at a private alcohol and drug treatment center for youth.
The nieces were visiting Walden's home from Miami July 8. Police said Walden whipped the girl when she refused to drink the urine. She eventually drank about a half-ounce, Nutter said.
The girl told her grandmother on the telephone that her uncle had ``made her drink pee-pee,'' Nutter said. The girl's mother notified the sheriff's office. When he was questioned, Walden told police that he was ``teaching her a lesson.''
