Army credit fraud investigation at Fort Stewart

FORT STEWART - Fort Stewart officials invited federal auditors to the base to help an investigation of Army credit-card fraud. But instead, they say the auditors criticized them in a report. <br> <br> The General Accounting Office was looking into ways Army credit cards are used to make inappropriate or unreasonably expensive purchases. <br> <br> Fort Stewart showed GAO investigators a warehouse full of office furniture as a bad example. Stephen Kandul, the post&#39;s director of contracting, said the GAO promised the furniture would not show up in a report. <br> <br> But last week the GAO report criticized $16,000 of office furniture at Fort Stewart -- along with lap dances, Elvis Presley pictures and John Elway football jerseys purchased by other posts with Army credit cards. <br> <br> Fort Stewart officials say it will be the last time they are so open with federal auditors.
